Southern Vietnam covers the Mekong Delta, the extreme southern end of the Mekong River, and the area around Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

As all deltas, it receives the bounty of the siltation from the upper Mekong, and as such is a very rich and lush area, covered with rice fields. It produces about half of the total of Vietnam's agricultural output (in fact the delta produces more rice than Korea and Japan altogether), and is the place for timeless sceneries of farmers planting or harvesting rice.

The Mekong splits in Cambodia into two main rivers, the Bassac (Hậu Giang) and the First river (Tiền Giang), then in Vietnam into a more complex system, creating a maze of small canals, rivers and arroyos interspersed with villages and floating markets.

Life in the Mekong Delta revolves much around the river, and all the villages are often accessible by river as well as by road.

Embrace the bustle of the metropolis and see some of city’s main sights: the Notre Dame Cathedral, the History Museum, the Jade Emperor Pagoda, the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum. Take a wander around Cho Lon, the city’s Chinatown, sample street food at Ben Thanh market and, come sundown, stroll along pedestrianized Nguyen Hue.

Take a day-trip from Ho Chi Minh City to the Cu Chi tunnels at Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc, a system of tunnels created by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war.
 

    2. Mekong Delta

The ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, the delta is carpeted in a dizzying variety of greens. It's a water world that moves to the rhythms of the mighty Mekong, where boats, houses and markets float upon the innumerable rivers, canals and streams that criss-cross the landscape like arteries.
 

Nature lovers will appreciate the Delta's collection of wildlife sanctuaries, particularly the beautifully green Tràm Chim National Park, home to a quarter of all bird species found in Vietnam, including the sarus crane, the world's tallest flying bird. Just a stone's throw from the Cambodian border, Tra Su Bird Sanctuary holds plenty of winged wildlife in its flooded forests.

Ben Tre Province provides some of the most beautiful scenery in the Mekong delta. The milk coffee colored waters wind their way along small channels lined with water palms, thatch and bamboo houses are nestled in the lush orchards. This is famous for its coconut products. It is a combination of many river islands. This is a good place to enjoy coconut, local life and take a rest.

Boat trips are one of the nicest ways to negotiate the network of channels, but the land in between the waters is just as fascinating. It's fun to follow some of the small trails along the channels, crossing sidearms on very basic bridges and walking by fruit and coconut orchards.

In the early morning the Cai Rang floating  market will open. The best time to go to the market is about 5:00-7:00 AM. Tourists often go to the pier to buy tickets and explore the market on a boat. In addition to fruits and vegetables, many small boats also sell breakfast, drinks, and snacks to serve the businessman and tourist
 

Although the quiet island of Phu Quoc lies just off the coast of Cambodia it is part of Vietnamese territory and is becoming increasingly popular.

It has acquired a bit of a legendary status with backpackers in Vietnam due to its stunning beaches, clear seas and great bars.

Aside from relaxing by the pool or lounging at the bar with a cocktail or two, there are plenty of things to do in Phu Quoc. Seeing as you are so close to such beautiful water it’s a shame not get involved with that at some point; jet skiing, diving, fishing and even personal boat hire are all great options.
