Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) 1 day tour from Hue city
Hue - 17th parallel - Khe Sanh Combat base - Vinh Moc Tunnels,
OVERVIEW
On July 20th, 1954, the Geneve agreement on suspension of war in Vietnam was signed. According to the content of the Agreement, Vietnam temporarily divided into two North - South regions, took the 17th parallel and the Hien Luong bridge - Ben Hai river as a temporary military boundary.
Also from here, the Ben Hai River carries on itself a historic mission: "the boundary separating the country of Vietnam".
For more than 20 years during the Vietnam War from 1954 to 1975.
17th parallel has witnessed a duel between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Therefore, here the Americans built the famous "Mcnamara electronic fence" to control the transfer of troops and weapons from the North of Vietnam to the South of Vietnam.
The McNamara electronic fence was decided to be built in June 1966 under the direct guidance of US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. It is including system of 17 military bases, combined with a barrier system (fence), barbed wire, minefields ...), electronic and ground reconnaissance devices (radars, sound sensors, seismic sensors ...), which are arranged continuously in areas with width 10 to 20 km, about 100 km long from Cua Viet port to road 9 and the Vietnam - Laos border.
The project cost US $ 2 billion (approximately US $ 15,760,000,000 in US dollars in 2020) even though before the commencement, McNamara was estimated to cost US $ 1 billion.
One of the most famous military bases of the McNamara electronic fence was Khe Sanh military base.
Khe Sanh is located in a valley of red soil 400m higher than the surface of the sea. This is one of three "magic eyes" (Khe Sanh, Vay Village and Ta Con air base) of McNamara electronic fence.
There were major battles in Khe Sanh during the Road 9 - Khe Sanh campaign in 1968, the Road 9 - South Laos campaign in 1971. US President Johnson once required the President of the Joint Chiefs of Staff The US signed a pledge by blood determined to keep Khe Sanh.
The Ta Con air base cluster with the field airfield is holding many items for victory in 1968: exhibitors, trenches, command bunkers, barbed fences, runways, aircraft, artillery, tanks and Many other infrastructure items.
Today, the DMZ Tour is one of the attractive tourist programs for visitors to Hue.
